Virginia Keeps Blue Crab Dredge Fishery Closed

Last night, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission voted to keep the winter dredge fishery closed. Here's the official announcement text from the VMRC website:

THE COMMISSION VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO CLOSE THE WINTER CRAB DREDGE FISHERY FOR THE SIXTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, CITING LOW CRAB ABUNDANCE AND SIGNIFICANT LEVELS OF OPPOSITION FROM BOTH THE PUBLIC AND THE COMMERCIAL CRAB POTTING COMMUNITY. THE COMMISSION UNANIMOUSLY ENDORSED THE CONCEPT OF ENACTING MANAGEMENT TRIGGERS THAT WOULD ALLOW THE WINTER CRAB DREDGE FISHERY TO BE REOPENED WHEN STOCK ABUNDANCE LEVELS INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE FUTURE.
